In the early 1850’s, a young sea captain named Ross James Chapman from the village of Findochty (pronounced Fin-ech-ti) decided to make barrel storage and whisky transportation aboard ships a little safer. Along with a cooper friend of his from Speyside, the heart of Scotch whisky country, the pair designed and perfected the Square Barrel.

Only the most skilled of coopers managed to master the technique and the design helped enormously when ships were loaded with their cargo of liquid gold.

Unfortunately these barrels when unloaded could not be easily rolled by stevedores so many lay in the corners of warehouses, waiting for those in the know to rescue them.

The art of making Square Barrels was thought to have died many decades ago, however the art of making great Scotch remains, and here-in is a masterpiece.

Fortunately, there are artisans that secretly carry on the tradition of the Square Barrel.

We know the secret, it's a Revolution.

The founders of Square Barrel Whisky Ltd have been involved in the bottling of specialist and premium malt whisky for many years and have decided to share this passion with others.

By creating the 360° Club we are in the position to offer carefully selected single cask malts to our connoisseur members.

(Managing Director, Donald Crawford, takes a moment to reflect with the family behind a Square Barrel at the 2006 Whisky Live event.)

Our intentions are to source what we believe to be appropriate or different whiskies that require the full appreciation of our member’s palate.

Once found, selected and stored we will contact our members to inform them of our forthcoming bottling, giving all an opportunity to purchase the next offering from Square Barrel.
